~You are allowed 1 suitcase and a backpack as your carry on. If you are bringing an instrument that does not fit into your back pack, please call us and we will figure out what we need to do to help you. No aerosol cans are allowed on the plane. Your checked bag can weigh not more than 50lbs or you will have to pay more.
~NO CELL PHONES- when you land in Atlanta you will all get to call your parents and let them know you got in safely. From that point on it will blog updates and the occasional trip to the internet cafe to send emails.
~Please be aware that in Africa you will not be able to go out an buy what you forgot. They most likely aren't going to have it. So try and think ahead and if you have questions, let us know and we will find the answer for you.
~Passport (please don't forget this!)
~Bible/notebook/pens
~Spray bottle/ this will come in handy at night when you are sweating and sweating. I used this trick when we lived in Mexico.
~Travel pillow (you will want this on the plane with you most likely)
~Light sleeping bag (VERY LIGHT) you are most likely NEVER going to be cold while we are there
~Towel (we found one at REI for $12.00 that is SUPER small but works really well. It comes in a 3x5 bag and opens up to be about 18x24 inches. Not enough to wrap around you, but enough to dry you off. If you want to bring a full size it is up to you. If you have room and enough weight, go for it!)
~2 sets of twin sheets (that you can leave as a gift to Helping Hands/Monica suggested fun ones, someone else is going to tye dye hers. They will be left for the orphans)
~Water Bottle: you can buy a $10.00 Nalgene at training camp if you don't have one
~Flash light and back up batteries/solar flashlights are great too, a little more expensive
~Camera & Batteries (as many as you think you will need)
~All your personal hygiene items-shampoo/conditioner/soap/toothbrush & toothpaste/pads/tampons/razors/deodorant/ ect. Shower flip flops are a must, you will want them at training camp too. About PERFUME can you imagine 18 different scents? I think not. Let us rely on our deodorant and baby wipes. Shall we?
~Sun glasses
~Jewelry- you really don't need to bring much. Especially nothing expensive or flashy.
~Baby wipe come in handy when you can't bathe and we all stink! ![]()
~Waterless sanitizer
~If you take any medication, we need to know about it and you will need to bring enough for the trip.
~We will have tylenol, but if you need something special you will need to bring that as well.
~Some form of Deet (bug repellant) or a product called jungle juice or there is another type you can put on your clothes that lasts for 6 washes. You all can check on that.
~If you can find a mosquito net to sleep under, Dr. K said we would need one. It would be best if you can find one here, but if not, you can buy one there.
Dress code: Hope you ALL seen the video!
~Shorts: are only to be worn at the Compound. So really you don't need but maybe 2 pair of shorts. They MUST be knee length. This is an AIM policy. Find Bermuda shorts, they are a good length.
